In the midst of global turmoil driven by the “Gang of Four”—a coalition of U.S. intelligence agencies that manipulated politics and economics—Johnny, at age 15, lied about his age to enlist in the military. He served in the Second Central American War, a devastating and morally bankrupt conflict that left him both physically and emotionally shattered. He lost his left arm and a close friend in the war, and ultimately deserted after discovering the government’s true motivations. Returning to Night City, he spent a month in a hotel, emotionally broken, before re-emerging under a new identity: Johnny Silverhand—a name inspired by his newly implanted cybernetic limb.
Birth of a Rockerboy
Determined to fight back against the corrupt systems that had ruined so many lives, Johnny formed the band Samurai with his friend Kerry Eurodyne. Their music was both a cry for revolution and a middle finger to the corporations. With members like Nancy, Denny, and Henry, Samurai quickly rose to fame. Their success was explosive—Johnny’s lyrics ignited the rockerboy movement, and their debut album skyrocketed to number one in just weeks. Yet, internal strife and personal tragedy struck when Nancy was imprisoned for killing her abusive husband, a turning point that fractured the band. Despite regrouping, Samurai disbanded in 2008 as its members drifted apart creatively.
The Rebel with a Message
Johnny’s solo career took a fiercely political turn. After DBS Music attempted to blackmail him by threatening to expose his status as a war deserter, he preemptively released an album, Sins of Your Brothers, where he admitted everything, laying bare the U.S. government’s wartime atrocities. Public perception shifted. No longer seen as a traitor, Johnny became a symbol of resistance.
Love, Loss, and Infamy
His personal life was chaotic and volatile. His relationship with Rogue ends after he cheats on her. He famously shot out the tires of an Arasaka executive’s Porsche in a petty parking dispute—an event that would come full circle later. His past continued to haunt him, but it was the reappearance of Alt Cunningham, a brilliant netrunner and former lover, that set his next chapter in motion.
In 2013, Alt was kidnapped by Arasaka operatives attempting to force her to perfect the Soulkiller—a program capable of digitizing human consciousness. The Hand
Unfortunately, the mission failed. Alt’s consciousness was forcibly transferred into the Net using her own software. Johnny, stricken with grief, allowed his cybernetic arm—something he referred to as “the Hand”—to exact revenge. Consumed by cyberpsychosis, he murdered an Arasaka exec and carried Alt’s lifeless body from the lab, unaware her mind was screaming from behind the Net.
One Last Stand
In 2023, during the height of the Fourth Corporate War, Johnny joined forces with Militech and Rogue once more. They aimed to destroy Arasaka Tower with a mini-nuke and finally rescue Alt from digital purgatory. After infiltrating the tower by force, Johnny planted the mini-nuke, but when he was going to leave, the merciless Adam Smasher arrived. Johnny was gunned down by him, his body left in ruins. The tower was destroyed, but the plan ultimately failed. But his story didn’t end there. Before dying, Spider Murphy inserted a chip into his skull containing his digitized engram—his conscious self, preserved.
Resurrection
Fast forward to 2077. The prototype Relic chip containing Johnny’s engram is stolen during a heist gone wrong, orchestrated by mercenaries V and Jackie Welles. V was forced to insert the relic into his head in order to preserve it. After V is fatally shot, the Relic activates, reviving them—but also beginning a process where Johnny’s consciousness starts to overwrite V’s. What follows is an intense psychological tug-of-war. Johnny is hostile at first, but over time, their shared struggle against Arasaka and the impending threat of death softens him. Through quests, side missions, and emotional moments—including a visit to his own grave—Johnny transforms from bitter revolutionary to remorseful companion.
Choose Your Legacy
Depending on the player’s choices in Cyberpunk 2077, Johnny’s fate diverges. In some endings, he merges completely with V’s body and sets out into the world anew, forever changed. In others, he joins Alt beyond the Blackwall, ascending to a realm of disembodied AI. Or he fades quietly as V retakes control and lives what little life they have left.
